Bond University recently hosted agents from around the world and KOM was one of the agents invited for the Bond University Agent Partner Experience 2012.

Located on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, Bond is best known to Canadian students for their Juris Doctor program that includes a number of Canadian law electives. Although it is a very popular program for Canadian students, there is much more on offer at this small private university.

My week at Bond was a mix of campus tours, faculty presentations and getting out to see the sights and sounds around the Gold Coast. Whether it was breakfast at student owned cafes, a wildlife sanctuary tour (complete with kangaroos and koalas), dinner and drinks at the Q1 or a cookout at the beach enjoying shrimp on the barbie, Bond staff were excellent hosts and provided a broad view of what Bond and the Gold Coast has to offer international students.

Bond Fast facts

Student population is 4500 which means small class sizes and personal attention

40% of the student body are international students

Programs are accelerated as Bond use a trimester system

Faculties include; Business and Commerce; Communication and Media Studies; Applied Linguistics; Information Technology; Health Sciences and Medicine; Humanities, Languages and International Studies; Law, Criminology and Criminal Justice; Sustainable Development and Architecture; Psychology, Counselling and Behaviour Management.

The Faculty of Law has an excellent record in international moot competitions, regularly competing against, and defeating, some of the most famous law schools in the world. State of the art moot courts on campus allow students to hone their skills in preparation for the real thing.

Whether practicing oral arguments in the electronic moot court, real-time finance training in the Macquarie Trading Room or taking a dip in the Olympic sized pool, the state of the art facilities at Bond add to the learning experience.

A beautiful campus in a great location, offering small class sizes and accelerated programs, Bond University is great option for students looking for a unique university with a real sense of community.

Please contact KOM Consultants for more information about Bond University.

Born in Canada, raised in Hong Kong and with an undergraduate linguistics degree from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Win Sum Cheung knew she wanted to pursue a professional speech pathology career in Hong Kong, but wanted the option of working in an English speaking country as well.

With limited postgraduate options in Hong Kong and Canada, Win Sum began looking at speech pathology programs in Australia, attracted to its close proximity to friends and family in Hong Kong.

“I applied to a few Australian universities and got offers for Macquarie, University of Melbourne and University of Sydney,” she says. “I chose Macquarie partly because their admissions and academic staff were much more helpful in answering my questions about the program.”

“Through my research, I found that Macquarie’s program is more established than other Australian universities,” she adds. “It also offers a wider variety of clinical placements, so I can get work experience in pediatric or a hospital or a school, depending on my interests.”

“And being qualified by the Speech Pathology Association of Australia means I’ll have work opportunities in English-speaking countries like Canada and the U.S.”

Win Sum was first attracted to speech pathology as a profession after undertaking voluntary observation work with speech disorder patients during her undergraduate study. But with two younger sisters yet to finish university, her parents gave her a warning:

“They said, ‘if you want to study postgrad, you better find a scholarship!’” she laughs.

Win Sum applied for an Endeavour Award, and with good references from her teachers and the community organisation she had been volunteering for, she was able to secure a scholarship.

“When I got the email saying I’d been successful, my hands were shaking – it was like I’d won the lottery! I called my mum straight away.”

A resident at Robert Menzies College, Win Sum’s focus is now on tackling the technical content of her program.

“The anatomy-related content is a challenge for me, as I haven’t studied science since high school,” she says. “Most of my time is spent studying!”

Read more about the Macquarie Master of Speech and Language Pathology.

Did you know bottled water emits the same amount of greenhouse gases per year in Australia as 13,000 cars?

La Trobe’s Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) and
La Trobe International are helping international students save money and the environment. All new international students will receive environmentally friendly reusable water bottles in 2012.

In Australia, water from taps is as clean as bottled water, safe, sustainable and cheaper, so it makes environmental and economic sense to use a BPA-free or stainless steel reusable bottle and fill up from home or at one of the University’s recently installed free water fountains across its campuses.

Beginning with this year, all new international students who register at La Trobe in Semester 1 will be supplied with a reusable La Trobe Generations water bottle, accompanied with information on the benefits of choosing Australian tap water over bottled water.

In 2011, La Trobe was ranked in the top 10 most sustainable Australian universities, and students began a campaign to reduce the University’s environmental impact through a push to ban bottled water at La Trobe. This is an easy but effective way of helping the environment and the University in its aim to become the most sustainable university in Australia.

La Trobe’s commitment to the social and environmental sustainability of its community and the planet through the introduction of La Trobe Generations saw the University collect the 2011 Green Gown Award for its continuing work in embedding sustainability into every facet of its community.

La Trobe University’s Office of Sustainability and La Trobe International are both pleased to be supporting this effort and hope the initiative will spread to the wider student community.

For more information on LaTrobe University, please contact KOM Consultants.

A month has already gone by since KOM students arrived in Australia. We asked them to let us hear their story of their first month in Australia.

Here is one story…

I have absolutely fallen in love with Australia. I would have to say my favourite places are Paddy’s Market, Chinatown Night Market and The Sydney Opera House. The weather here is incredible and the people here are laid back and very friendly. I am in no way missing the snow back at home!

When I first arrived, I had to think about everything – from buying plates and cutlery to planning out my meals for each week, so I can purchase my food accordingly. After about two weeks in, I was settled. It’s very easy to get used to the lifestyle here in Australia.

Five things I cannot live without: bug spray (the insects here are very large!), sun block (the sun rays are very strong), my personal blog (Documenting my travels makes it real and acts as a great pick-me-up for when I’m down), Skype (to keep everyone I miss at home updated) and a good Australian Fashion magazine, like Vogue Australia (because the fashions here are always evolving and it’s good to stay current!).

Melissa

Thanks Melissa. Melissa is currently studying at UWS in Sydney Australia.

Six years reporting for Prime TV, Channel 9 and Channel 10 were followed by more than three years leading media and public relations for CareFlight, the aero-medical emergency service.

“With CareFlight I worked closely with doctors and witnessed firsthand the lives we were saving. It really opened my eyes,” Renee (pictured) says.

It also stirred a desire in Renee that returns her to Griffith University to renew her interest in communications, albeit from a novel perspective.

The 32-year-old starts a Master of Speech Pathology at the Gold Coast campus next week, one of 35 students who have enrolled in the new program.

“When I was looking for Speech Pathology study options and my partner found the new Masters program on the Griffith website, I knew this was meant to be,” she says.

“When you want something so bad, you just do it. And with a Masters you don’t have to start all over again.

“I’ve had this desire to help people directly but I never had the qualifications. I’ve always had such a passion for communication, I had skills in articulation and I believed I could use all this to really help people.”

She has always been aware of voice patterns throughout her working life, a skill developed initially by mimicking the pitch of TV journalists she admired in her teens and early 20s.

At Griffith Renee will be trained to help and support a range of people in need, from post trauma patients to children and adults with speech, language or swallowing difficulties.

She is eager to engage with the problem-based learning challenges students will face almost from day one. The two-year full-time program will also incorporate a series of industry and clinical placements designed to give full and early effect to classroom learning.

Griffith Health has collaborated with a wide range of service providers in southeast Queensland and northern NSW to gather support for student placement opportunities.

Griffith Health also liaised closely with the Gold Coast Health Service District in the development of the program which aims to develop and retain a local workforce.

“Because of this consultation we are sitting in a fantastic position from the outset to connect and engage with clients, clinicians, and the whole community,” Associate Professor Elizabeth Cardell, who heads the program, says.

The program will be officially launched on Friday (Feb 24) and will eventually be based at the new $150 million Griffith Health Centre which is under construction and due to be completed in 2013.

The possibility of working in the other new building also under construction across the road from the new health centre is now a tempting thought for Renee.

“I believe I’ll be on the Gold Coast, working in that great new hospital. I remember covering the story when plans for the new hospital first came to light many years ago. It’s funny how life goes.”
