57 days until the Olympics

Staff and students from the School of Tourism at Bournemouth University are getting in to the Olympic spirit and helping prepare for the Games this summer.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students from all courses within the School of Tourism, as well as staff, are getting involved in a wide range of Games related research and activities.

Roles they will be undertaking include acting as torch bearers, venue managers, athlete escorts, medal and flower bearers, interpreters, transporters, Games Makers and press officers whilst others are working with companies such as Sodexo who are dealing with all the hospitality and catering at the Games.

The RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport) team which involves BU Events and Sports students as well as staff is continuing to have very close links with the forthcoming Games through a busy programme of 2012 events and activities.

Over the last four years, the project has given school children and young people the opportunity to get involved in sports and cultural activities, providing experiences that they may not have had the chance to try before or allowing them to develop leadership skills to deliver simple games and sports.

Through their work, the team have worked hard to both create new and strengthen established links within the community and have been given the approval by LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) to use the INSPIRE mark logo, the official badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.

Bournemouth is situated on the south coast of England and is less than two hours from London. With a population of just over 163,000, it is large enough to have all the facilities of a big town but small enough that you never feel lost.   Bournemouth, in the county of Dorset, is a long-established tourist destination and as Britain’s premier seaside holiday resort, attracts visitors from all over the UK and beyond.
