A senior academic and physiotherapist at RGU has been awarded a fully-funded PhD fellowship from the Scottish Government’s Chief Scientist Office (CSO) and Parkinson’s UK, to further her work on exercise provision for people living with the complex long-term condition.

Julie Jones, a senior lecturer in RGU’s School of Health Sciences, has been awarded around £250,000 for the Clinical Academic Fellowship, which is the first of its kind received by a member of RGU and a rare achievement for an allied health practitioner. …

Scientists at the University of Dundee have confirmed that a key cellular pathway that protects the brain from damage is disrupted in Parkinson’s patients, raising the possibility of new treatments for the disease.

Parkinson’s is a disabling disorder of the brain for which there is no cure. Mutations in two genes called PINK1 and Parkin are associated with early-onset forms of Parkinson’s. Both encode distinct classes of enzymes that play a pivotal role in protecting the brain against stress. …

The University of Gloucestershire is celebrating success in being shortlisted for two awards in this year’s national Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs).

This follows the university’s success in winning the top award in two THELMA categories last year –  for outstanding financial performance, and for outstanding marketing and communications team.
