Professor David DayFlinders University has been listed among the QS World University Ranking’s top 200 elite institutions world-wide for its performance in three subject areas – medicine, psychology and sociology.Sociology was ranked in the top 100 globally. The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor David Day (pictured), said Flinders has also had a strong showing in the German-based CWTS Leiden Ranking system of scientific publications, appearing among the top 500 universities for the first time.Professor Day said that since the QS rankings are intended to provide comparative information at discipline level and to highlight the excellence of institutions in specialist areas, the results were very pleasing for Flinders.

In the new edition of QS World University Rankings by Subject, the education information provider evaluated 2,858 universities and ranked 678 institutions in total. Rankings are reached by a methodology that combines surveys of academic and employer reputation with data on global citations of academic papers.

“The rankings indicate that our research reputation and performance is considered to be among the world’s 200 best in a number of highly competitive fields,” Professor Day said.

“Flinders’ strong academic performance in the medical and social sciences is recognised nationally and internationally, and these two sets of ratings point to the world-class quality of our scholarly and research activities.”

Under Leiden’s system, which is statistically based on the past five years of international citations of research and research impact, the social sciences and humanities were ranked 11th among Australian universities. Biomedical and health sciences at Flinders were ranked 13th in Australia, with natural sciences and engineering at 15.
