IT Carlow Student Film-Maker Receives Honours for Documentary MovieShane Campbell, from Ballymurn in Wexford, who is a fourth year TV & Media Production student at Institute of Technology Carlow, is thrilled with the double honour his documentary film A Light in Darkness has received. The 18-minute film, which Shane produced for his 3rd Year project, tells the story of Wexford Marine Watch, the voluntary organisation which provides suicide prevention patrols along Wexford quays, estuary and harbour.

“I’m thrilled with the reaction to A Light in Darkness. I’m really pleased it’s been accepted by Canberra as it’s a festival focused on films around mental health and this is very much what my film is about”, commented Shane. “I’d like to thank my lecturers who advised and guided me – in particular Marcus Lehman”.

A Light in Darkness was awarded Best Short Film at The Wexford Documentary Film Festival which showcases award-winning national and international documentary films and has a strong focus on films that explore social, political and environmental issues

Taking place on 12th October, the Canberra Mental Health Film Festival provides an inspiring voice for social justice and human rights for people with mental illness and fights the stigma associated with mental illness.

Wexford Marine Watch comprises 110 trained volunteers who give up one night of their time on a rota-basis each month to help prevent loss of life, make people aware of the dangers of the water and provide assistance to anyone who may be in difficulty. Since its founding in 2012, nobody has lost their life in Wexford harbour through suicide.
