University of Sydney Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws BA/LLB Overview

The University of Sydney’s Law school offers a unique undergraduate pathway for students wishing to enter the Law field. It is mandatory that all undergraduate Law students entering The University of Sydney’s Law School enrol in a combined degree with another discipline such as arts, economics, commerce, design in architecture, science or information technology.

The University Sydney’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is international in focus and global in perspective – it is one of the few Law Schools in Australia that requires the compulsory study of two units in international law. The elective program allows you to undertake specialized study in human rights law, private international law, advanced corporate and commercial law, or a range of specialized areas such as media law or medical law.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) course combines study in a wide range of subject areas in one of the University of Sydney’s foundation degrees, with Australia’s most reputable LLB. Consistently ranked as one of the best humanities faculties in the world, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney offers you the opportunity to select one of more than 50 majors from core disciplines such as English and History, or specialist fields including Political Economy, linguistics or a foreign language. Students will complete the Bachelor of Arts over three years in combination with the equivalent of the first year of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB). In the fourth and fifth years, students complete the remaining units of study for the award of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB).

Course Structure

In this five year course you will spend the first three years undertaking a combination of arts and law units of study, to the value of 48 credit points each year, and complete an arts and social sciences major in the subject area of your choice. It is important to plan a major in first year because most second year units of study, which allow you to specialize in an area of interest, have junior unit of study prerequisites. In the fourth year, you will study a fixed curriculum, comprising units of study in a range of areas of law including administrative law, federal constitutional law, and property and commercial law. The fifth year will allow you to choose elective units of study offered by the University of Sydney Law School so that you can specialize in a particular area of the law.
