Overview

Griffith University Doctor of Medicine Overview

The Gold Coast is poised to become an Australian health heartland with Griffith University at its centre.

A unique Health and Knowledge Precinct has developed around Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus, with the opening of the $150 million Griffith Health Centre and the $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital. The co-location of Griffith University and the Gold Coast University Hospital and their new state-of-the-art facilities significantly extends the range of health and medical services on the Gold Coast — facilities that create an ideal hands-on environment for the clinical training of doctors, nurses and future health professionals

The new Health Centre operates in tandem with the new 750-bed University Hospital, creating a health hub with a dedicated focus on study, research and medical employment.

Medical facilities of the highest order, the most up-to-date knowledge and unique opportunities for collaboration make this one of the most exciting developments in Australia.

The $150 million Health Centre represents Griffith University’s largest investment in a single building in its 40-year history.

All Griffith Health programs on the Gold Coast are together on the one campus with the schools of medicine, dentistry and oral health, and psychology now located under the one roof. The delivery of anatomy, social work, and nutrition and dietetics programs from the Health Centre further enhances our interdisciplinary focus, where teams of students from different areas in health work together to solve problems while learning about challenging healthcare issues.

Health students at the centre also gain hands-on experience with the delivery of clinical services to the general public such as dental care, physiotherapy, and psychology. The centre is also now a focal point for medical research, providing an ideal laboratory backdrop for staff from our Griffith Health Institute to continue and extend ground-breaking clinical trials

The Griffith University Doctor of Medicine program has an emphasis on communication skills and teaches the art and science of medicine in its wider social and ethical context. The Griffith MD incorporates extensive clinical placements in off-campus healthcare facilities ranging from rural settings through to the Gold Coast University Hospital. Strategies are provided to promote lifelong learning, resourcefulness in seeking information and the ability to adapt to new technologies, ensuring a successful postgraduate career in any discipline area.

Griffith University’s School of Medicine opened in 2005 with our first students graduating 2008. Today, more than 1200 graduates are in independent practice or in specialty training.
