Macquarie University’s Bachelor of Clinical Science / Doctor of Medicine Overview

Macquarie University offers an undergraduate entry program pathway into the Doctor of Medicine degree.  Students completing high school can apply for the Bachelor of Clinical Science program and continue upon successful completion (see below) into the Macquarie MD.

This innovative and accelerated degree focuses on human clinical sciences and builds the foundational professional skills needed for a career in medicine.   You will have access to Macquarie University Hospital, the first and only not for profit hospital on a university campus.  There you will have access to the latest simulation technology and human anatomical specimens.

The Bachelor of Clinical Science offers you a broad knowledge of fundamental biochemical, physiological and anatomical workings of the human body.  You’ll gain critical thinking, problem solving, communication, ethics and personal reflection skills, all in preparation for a career in Medicine.

Progression from the Bachelor of Clinical Science into the Macquarie MD program (without the need for further admission tests) is guaranteed for students meeting the following:

  • An international student with an unconditional place in the Bachelor of Clinical Science/Macquarie MD pathway
  • Completion of the Bachelor of Clinical Science with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70
  • Achievement of a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 in the professional practice units in the Bachelor of Clinical Science

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Clinical Science can be completed in 2 years (by completing 3 semesters each year).

You’ll learn about anatomy, biochemistry, biology, embryology, genetics and genomics, histology, immunology, medical microbiology, neuroscience, pathology, physics and physiology.  You will also develop skills in personal reflection, communication and critical thinking in professional practice units specifically designed for this course

In your second year, you will choose a stream that aligns with your career/postgraduate study intentions.  The Bachelor of Clinical Science also offers the opportunity to enroll in research units, where you work directly with world class researchers and contribute to current projects.

2023 Application Requirements:

High school requirements:

  • OSSD: 87% or higher 6 best year 12 including English (4U) – subjects must be U/M/Z
  • Other provinces:
    • Alberta – 85% or higher for best 4 Level 30 subjects with exams including English Language Arts 30
    • BC – 8% or higher for best 4 year 12 Ministry approved subjects including English Studies 12
  • Pre-requisite subjects: Senior Math (covering Calculus/Statistics/Algebra/Trig/Vectors or Geometry)  and Chemistry

University requirements:

  • One year completed: suggested minimum 86%
  • Two years completed: suggested minimum 84%
  • Three years completed: suggested minimum 80%

Interview is required – MMI style comprising 4 interview stations

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

In Canada, provincial and territorial medical regulatory authorities have the responsibility to confer licences to physicians. The Medical Council of Canada plays an important role in the assessment of potential physicians in Canada. This assessment includes national qualifying examinations and satisfactory completion of acceptable postgraduate training. It is the responsibility of the medical school graduate to contact the provincial body for regulations and requirements.
