Overview

Flinders University Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) Overview

Flinders’ Master of Occupational Therapy is a 2 year coursework program which is offered by their College of Nursing and Health Sciences.  The course equips graduates to meet the entry level competency standards specified by the Australian professional accrediting body.

At the completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Identify and apply theoretical approaches within occupational therapy including the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework;
  • Understand humans as occupational beings and integrate this information in providing occupational therapy for individuals, organisations and populations including rural and remote health;
  • Collaborate and communicate with clients to meet their occupational needs in a culturally sensitive manner;
  • Select interventions relevant to the needs of clients using reflective and evidence-based practice;
  • Apply occupational therapy skills to enhance a client’s health and participation in life through engagement in occupation;
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with other health professions in providing high quality health care; and
  • Reflect on their practice and plan their ongoing professional development as life-long learners.

Course Structure

Flinders’  Master of Occupational Therapy consists of 72 units.

You will progressively study topics focusing on:

  • evaluation and practice of occupational therapy
  • inter-professional practice
  • contemporary issues in occupational therapy practice.

Extensive fieldwork is included to ensure competency in practice.

Clinical Placements

Students will undertake three clinical placements totaling 1,000 hours in accordance with the accreditation standards of the Occupational Therapy Council of Australia. These placements are full-time and for eight weeks. Students will need to undertake at least one full-time placement in a rural or remote area. Placements may be scheduled outside of normal University teaching weeks.   Further details will be provided on commencement of your studies.

Applicants must have a bachelor degree in a health related discipline with a minimum GPA of 65%.  Students will also be required to they have completed the following prerequisite topics:

  • 2 courses of study focused on an understanding of body structures and function such as human biology, physiology and anatomy including detailed musculoskeletal anatomy with an emphasis on the upper limb;
  • 1 course of study focused on an understanding of the human and social environment and social perspectives in health such as psychology and sociology;
  • 1 course of study focused on research methods and/or evidence based practice

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition

The Master of Occupational Therapy is an approved program for registration by the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia which has set registration standards that aim to ensure that every registered health practitioner has the qualifications and skills to provide safe care to the Australian community.

Students wishing to register in Canada should contact the Canadian Association for Occupational Therapists.  The CAOT helps those who want to work in Canada to understand the requirements for registration.
