Overview

University of South Australia’s Occupational Therapy degree provides students with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to become an innovative and competent occupational therapist. With a strong focus on practical skills, you will complete a considerable number of field placements, providing valuable practical experience that will enable a seamless transition from study to the workforce. Important industry connections may also be made during these placements.

Course Structure

Within this two year (72 unit) Master of Occupational Therapy program at University of South Australia, Occupational Therapy students will cover major theoretical approaches and skills occupational therapists use to work with a broad range of clients.  The importance of critical thinking, superior communication skills, ethical action and problem solving are also explored in depth.

Students are also required to attend a mandatory 3-day intensive orientation program at University of South Australia to ensure they are adequately prepared for the accelerated nature of the program.

Clinical Work Experience

Practical learning is a strong focus of this master degree and you will practice your skills in real scenarios when you complete 1,000 hours of field placements. Placements will take place in a variety of settings, such as health, disability and community agencies, kindergartens and aged care facilities.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have a completed bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 65%.  Students will also be required to show that they have completed the following courses:

  • equivalent of 4.5 unit course of Human Anatomy;
  • equivalent of 4.5 unit course of Human Physiology;
  • equivalent of 4.5 unit course of either Human Psychology or Sociology/Anthropology;
  • equivalent of 4.5 unit course of Research Methodologies.

The Master of Occupational Therapy at University of South Australia is accredited by Occupational Therapy Australia. This program is accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Students wishing to register in Canada should contact the Canadian Association for Occupational Therapists.  The CAOT helps those who want to work in Canada to understand the requirements for registration.

World renowned cancer researcher, ‘s Professor Shudong Wang, was honoured at the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) annual Research Excellence Awards in Canberra on 27 June, winning the Top Development Grant for 2017.
