The Occupational Therapy (OT) program at La Trobe University in Australia aims to qualify students to work in various occupational therapy roles.  This program covers the knowledge and skills students need to assess and treat patients, including the use of occupations, intervention techniques, the design of equipment, and adaptation of environments.  This Occupational Therapy program also offers supervised clinical placements to help students develop a sound basis for professional practice. La Trobe’s Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) provides you with the clinical knowledge, professional skills and industry connections needed to launch your career.

La Trobe Occupational Therapy graduates work in health and welfare systems including general hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community health services, mental health agencies, health services for older people and children with special needs, and support services for intellectually disadvantaged people. Graduates may also work in private practice or as a coordinator or consultant in areas such as occupational health and safety.

What You Will Study

Clinical Work Experience

Occupational Therapy students at La Trobe University in Australia will complete 1000 hours of professional practice placements in the final two years of the Occupational Therapy (OT) program. This consists of four weeks in third year and two eight-week blocks and a project placement in fourth year. Students are able to gain experience in a variety of government and non-government agencies including hospitals, community agencies, schools and rehabilitation centres.   La Trobe University  students will experience working with people of different ages, recently acquired and long-standing health needs, and interventions that focus on the person, their occupation and the environment.

Students will need to have a completed High School Diploma with a minimum GPA of 75%.

Prerequisites: English, one of Biology, Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Hons) program is accredited by the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia and recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.   Graduates are eligible for occupational therapy registration in any State or Territory of Australia through the  Occupational Therapy Board of Australia. Graduates applying to licensing in Canada will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.

Students wishing to license as a Occupational Therapist in Canada should contact the Association of Canadian Occupational Therapy Regulators Organization (ACOTRO)  for procedures and accreditation procedures. The ACOTRO is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.
