Overview

Bond University’s Doctor of Physiotherapy offers an innovative problem-based learning model of physiotherapy education to prepare entry level physiotherapists for their roles and responsibilities as first contact practitioners. The program integrates the clinical, pathological and related sciences with the physiotherapy knowledge, skills and professional behaviours and attitudes required to examine, diagnose and treat physiotherapy clients.

**Bond University’s Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine in Australia have formed an educational alliance with McMaster University in Canada, which is internationally renowned for its focus on problem based learning PBL**

Course Structure

Bond’s  Doctor of Physiotherapy runs over two years, consisting of three semesters per year.  This program will assist you to progressively develop and apply your knowledge, skills and professional attitudes and behaviour for physiotherapy practice and places a strong emphasis on clinical experiential learning with 50 per cent of the program undertaken in a clinical context. The first 30 weeks of clinical practice addresses five core areas in both hospital and community settings and one elective. Variable experiences across the lifespan are sought in the clinical areas of:

  • Orthopaedics
  • Cardio-respiratory practice
  • Out-patient musculoskeletal practice (hospital or private practice settings)
  • Neurological and ortho-geriatric rehabilitation (hospital and community settings)
  • Chronic Disease and Disability, whether paediatric or adult in context
  • Paediatrics or Women’s / Men’s health
  • Private / Sports Practice

In the final semester, the program culminates in a 12-week clinical internship with an aligned research project. This extending clinical / research opportunity is designed to ensure graduates are well prepared for entry into the physiotherapy workforce.

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of a Bachelor of Exercise Science and Sports Science or Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Performance  or Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree from Bond University, or equivalent degree from recognized institution with a minimum GPA of 2/4 or 5/7 (65%) or higher.  Student will be required to meet the following prerequisites:

  • Two semesters of Human Anatomy OR equivalent
  • Two semesters of Human Physiology OR equivalent
  • One semester of Biomechanics OR equivalent
  • One semester of Research Design/Statistics OR equivalent
  • One semester of Physiology of Exercise OR equivalent

Students will also be required to successfully complete an interview.  Usually done over Skype.

Bond University’s Doctor of Physiotherapy has been accredited as an entry-level program by the Australian Physiotherapy Council and is listed as an approved program of study by The Physiotherapy Board of Australia.

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAPR is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.

Associate Professor Francina Cantatore has been nominated for Academic of the Year in the prestigious Australian Law Awards to be held at the end of August.

Dr Cantatore, an academic at for the past seven years, is the Director of the Bond Law Clinic and was instrumental in the University setting up six law clinics after establishing the first in 2013.

Research Fellow Dr Amanda McCullough was announced as the recipient of the Emerging Health Researcher Award for 2017, at an awards breakfast in Sydney on Friday, 20 March.

The $25,000 prize will go towards furthering Dr McCullough’s research career, and help drive her crucial work that aims to stop the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria by reducing antibiotic prescription among general practitioners (GPs).
