Overview

The Master of Physiotherapy program at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, is a two year post-graduate degree leading to professional registration as a Physiotherapist in Australia. Along with Flinder’s health service and private practice partners, Flinder’s look forward to our graduates making a difference in the lives of patients in Adelaide, rural South Australia, the Northern Territory and beyond.

Teaching for the course is embedded mainly within clinical settings across South Australia and has close links with healthcare providers to best prepare you for professional practice as a physiotherapist.  Emphasis is placed on preparing you to become a contemporary health professional who is able to work effectively across a range of settings, and in metropolitan or rural/remote locations.

Course Structure

The Master of Physiotherapy consists of 72 units.  You will progressively study the following:

  • interprofessional practice
  • musculoskeletal practice
  • cardiorespiratory practice
  • neurological rehabilitation
  • complex case and chronic disease

Clinical placements are included in every semester to ensure competency in practice.

Clinical Work Experience

The course includes 26 weeks of clinical placement.  You will be expected to undertake placements in metropolitan Adelaide and in rural or remote areas of South Australia and/or Australia.  Placements are often scheduled outside of normal university teaching weeks and you will be provided with further details on the commencement of your studies.

Flinder’s Master of Physiotherapy applicants must normally hold an approved degree with a GPA of no less than 65%, or an equivalent qualification;

Applicants must demonstrated that they have completed the following prerequisite topics:

  • the equivalent of 9 units of human physiology, including detailed exercise physiology
  • the equivalent of 9 units of anatomy, including detailed musculoskeletal and neurological anatomy
  • the equivalent of 4.5 units of study focused on an understanding of the human and social environment and social perspectives in health such as psychology and sociology
  • the equivalent of 4.5 units study of research methods and/or evidence based practice

The Master of Physiotherapy course at Flinders University equips graduates to meet the entry level competency standards specified by the Australian professional accrediting body, the Australian Physiotherapy Council.

Flinder’s Physiotherapy School graduates wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAPR is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.
