University of Gloucestershire Physiotherapy School Postgraduate Entry

Overview

Physiotherapy is a science-based healthcare profession where practitioners use their skills to improve and manage a wide range of medical conditions.

In this course, you will study the core areas of physiotherapy and apply these to clinical situations in this hands-on program. Your study will include practice-based learning in a variety of NHS and private settings to give you a diverse experience to prepare for your future career as a physiotherapist. You will also build up valuable experience in supporting long-term condition management programs and a musculoskeletal clinic at the University or in a local clinic.

The course benefits from using state-of-the-art facilities including treatment rooms, rehabilitation space, a hospital ward, a skills laboratory, a biomechanics laboratory, physiology laboratories, a strength and conditioning suite, fitness suite and a simulated ‘home’ environment.

You will study a variety of modules from ‘Functional Anatomy and Biomechanics’ to ‘Leadership and Innovation in Practice’. Methods of teaching and learning will include:

The academic year will be split into blocks of taught delivery interweaved with internal placement and blocks of placement activity. Teaching and placement activity will run Monday to Friday throughout the academic year and may require students to undertake placements in other counties within the UK.

Clinical Placement

Year One

You will undertake a year-long placement in long-term condition management at or close to the University campuses. You will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience of managing group rehabilitation programs in cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, arthritis management, cancer rehabilitation and other areas. You will also undertake two 6-week placements at a hospital, clinic, community or other setting in one year.

Year Two

You will undertake a year long placement in musculoskeletal practice within the University’s Physiotherapy Clinic and the local private practice settings. You will learn to assess, diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders under supervision. You will also undertake a further two 6-week placements in at a hospital, clinic, community or other setting.

Entry Requirements

Students will need to have a completed undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 80% / 3.0.  Degrees must be in a related field (biological sciences, sport science, or health program) with significant studies in anatomy and physiology.  This means 3-4 classes dedicated to human anatomy and human physiology. Experience of the research process is also an essential requirement.

Students must also show they have physiotherapy experience and will have to submit evidence to support this.

Professional Recognition

MSc Physiotherapy (Preregistration) program is accredited by the  Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and  validated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).  On completion of the course you will be eligible to apply for membership of the CSP (Chartered Status) and HCPC Registration, to practice as a Registered Physiotherapist.

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAPR is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.
