Overview

University of Sydney Psychology School Overview

Clinical psychology can be studied as either a standalone coursework program, the Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) or as a postgraduate double degree incorporating coursework and research, the Master of Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy (MCP and PhD). The MCP and PhD provides psychology graduates with clinical and doctorate-level research training in clinical psychology that is consistent with international standards of professional psychology.

The programs adopt a scientific and evidence-based approach to clinical psychology. The treatment model is based on a cognitive-behavioural approach, and the introduction of alternative models of therapy in the second year ensures both a depth and breadth to your clinical training.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for admission, applicants must have completed a program in psychology extending over four years and accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).

Two referee reports must be submitted, one academic referee report and one clinically relevant work experience referee report (or two academic referee reports).

An application will be considered incomplete, and will not be evaluated nor proceed to interview, unless all documents are received by the closing date. Late applications are not accepted.

If successful, you will be invited to attend a selection interview which specifically assesses relevant academic, research and clinical work experience, performance, aptitude for clinical psychology and awareness of ethical issues relevant to clinical practice. Interviews are usually held in the last week of November. Web-cam based Skype interviews may be offered to international applicants.

Following the selection interview, you will be ranked compared to other applicants upon your application, academic record and interview performance. You will have up to one week to accept the offer.

Under the Australian National Law, students must obtain provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia before they commence their program of study, and for the duration of the program. In the event that the Registration Board refuses an application for provisional registration, the offer of candidature in the program will be rescinded – it is not possible to complete the program without holding provisional registration as a psychologist.
