The School of Education is one of the larger schools in the University and operates across 3 campuses – Burwood, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool. It is a leading provider of primary and secondary teacher education, early childhood educator preparation, educational leadership and adult, vocational and applied learning education.

Deakin University’s courses in primary teaching focus on initial professional studies in primary education and qualify you to teach up to Year 8 or, for those who choose the middle years option, to Year 10. As a graduate, you’ll be equipped to teach young people the knowledge, skills, understanding and values to enable them to make sense of, and contribute to, the world now and in the future.

About the Master of Teaching (Primary)

Deakin’s Master of Teaching (Primary) course prepares graduates for employment as a primary teacher in Australia and overseas. The course includes core subjects of the primary curriculum: English, mathematics, science, humanities and social sciences, the arts, technology, health and physical education, and opportunities to develop breadth of knowledge in areas of interest.

Completion of at least 60 days of supervised professional experience (70 days for Primary Extended Curriculum), and students must successfully complete the Deakin Teaching Performance Assessment. Students will also be required to take the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) during the course.

Applicants must have completed an appropriate undergraduate degree or approved equivalent carrying 70% GPA.

All applicants must complete an additional selection tool for non-academic attributes. Deakin University is using the CASPer test. CASPer is an online, video-scenario based situational judgment test, designed to measure non-academic suitability for teaching.

Deakin University’s Master of Teaching programs are accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as an initial teacher education program against the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) program standards and the Australian professional standards for graduate teachers.

Graduates of Deakin’s Master of Teaching are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
