About the Master of Teaching (Primary)

LaTrobe’s Master of Teaching (Primary) is a postgraduate entry program.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) offered at La Trobe University in Australia addresses the identified need to move from a generalist model of primary teacher education to a specialist approach by specializations in:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)
  • English
  • mathematics
  • physical education
  • health
  • languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Indonesian – Bendigo campus only has Indonesian available)
  • humanities

There is demand in the sector to build efficacy of graduates in the areas of diagnostic learning, special needs, pedagogical expertise and relationship skill building. This course gives you the opportunity to specialize in these areas. The pedagogical structure allows graduates to work and adapt effectively in complex contemporary learning environments.

Professional experience is based around inquiry and experiential learning with iterative skill development opportunities linking knowledge, context and experience to understanding the theoretical dimensions needed to understand practice in school and other learning contexts. You’ll complete 60 days of professional experience during the course.

Applicants undertaking the Master of Teaching Primary at La Trobe University must hold a Bachelor degree or approved equivalent in a relevant discipline area/s for primary or secondary teaching as per the National Program Standards and the Victorian Institute of Teaching. For a primary focus these may include:

  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Languages
  • Physical Education
  • etc.

Applicants must also take a non-cognitive assessment test called CASPer, and it is completed online.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

La Trobe University’s Master of Teaching (Primary): All initial teacher education programs are required to be accredited with the VIT every five years. Consequently, the Master of Teaching (Primary) is currently undertaking accreditation with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Professional registration may require an application to VIT and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Graduates of La Trobe’s Master of Teaching programs are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
