About the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) course is fully accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and prepares graduates for employment as a secondary teacher in Australia and overseas. Alongside core studies, you will complete two secondary curriculum studies from English, TESOL, Languages other than English, Drama, Dance, Media, Visual Arts, Music, Humanities, Business and Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Health, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Science and Environmental Science.

In addition to your curriculum studies, the final stage of the Masters of Teaching (Secondary) course offers you the opportunity to choose one of the following specialization pathways: Internship, Leadership, Inclusive Education, Languages Teaching, Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages, Internationalization, or Research.

You’ll be able to teach in secondary schools from junior secondary to VCE levels, as well as taking up education positions within organizations, cultural institutions, TAFE and adult community educational settings.

  • A Bachelor degree in a different discipline carrying a 70% GPA, with sufficient prior study in two specialist teaching areas.
  • All applicants must complete an additional selection tool for non-academic attributes. Deakin University is using the CASPer test. CASPer is an online, video-scenario based situational judgment test, designed to measure non-academic suitability for teaching.

Deakin University’s Master of Teaching programs are accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as an initial teacher education program against the Australian professional standards for teachers.

Graduates of Deakin’s Master of Teaching Secondary are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
