About the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Flinders Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a pre-service teacher education postgraduate course that builds on prior learning and develops advanced professional knowledge, practice and relationship skills relevant to teaching.

Flinders Master of Teaching Secondary course is offered to graduates who wish to teach years 8 – 12 in secondary schools.

Topics covered during the 2 years include specialist curriculum studies, school placements and a number of topics devoted to issues in education.

Specializations normally offered are: Business Education, English, Drama, Mathematics, Information Technology, Modern languages (restricted to Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German and Modern Greek), Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences), Visual Arts, Health Education, Physical Education, History, Geography, Legal Studies, Politics, Psychology, Nutrition, Tourism, TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and Women’s Studies.  Not all teaching specializations are offered every year.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements for the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

  • Applicants to Flinders University Master of Teaching Secondary must hold an approved undergraduate Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification carrying a 70% GPA with specializations which cover 2 teaching areas.
  • Applicants need to have completed an undergraduate minor in another curriculum studies specialization offered by the School of Education  in order to teach that subject to year 10.
  • Applicants need to have completed an undergraduate major in one curriculum studies specialization offered by the School of Education in order to teach that subject to year 12.
  • Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organizational and planning skills.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

Successful completion of this program provides a recognized academic qualification which will enable graduates to apply for teacher registration in South Australia and some overseas countries.

Graduates of Flinders University Master of Teaching are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
