About the Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) at James Cook University in Australia focuses on the education of students in Years 7 to 12. The junior secondary years (Years 7-10) is an exciting phase of learning, while the senior secondary years (Years 11-12) are a critical time for young people as they develop their plans for post-secondary education and work.

You will learn to teach two secondary areas of teaching in Years 7 to 10, specializing in one related secondary area of teaching in Years 11 and 12.

The Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) at JCU includes prescribed professional placements. Students may be required to undertake such placements away from the campus at which they are enrolled, at their own expense.

James Cook’s Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) is a postgraduate entry program.

An integral part of becoming a teacher is gaining practical experience in schools. You will be required to complete a total of 80 placement days, with a highlight in the final phase of your studies of a 20-day extended placement. Placements are allocated in government and non-government schools.

James Cook University offers professional development opportunities, student flexibility through course design and structure, as well as a successful history in securing funding for major research programs.

Prior to undertaking your final professional experience, all pre-service teachers must satisfactorily complete the Literacy and Numeracy initial Teacher Education Test (LANTITE).

Entry Requirements

Applicants to James Cook University’s Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) will need a completed Bachelor degree (or equivalent) that does not lead to teacher registration (with a minimum GPA of 4.0 on a 7-point scale). The previous degree must include sufficient amount of study in the intended teaching area ie a Bachelor of Science if interested in becoming a science teacher.

James Cook University’s Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Graduates of this course are eligible for Teacher registration in Australia.

Graduates of James Cook University’s Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
