The University of Gloucestershire in England is a teacher training provider for the award Postgraduate Certificate in Education PGCE Secondary with QTS in nine core subjects: Art & Design, Computer Science with ICT, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Education, Physical Education, Science (Biology), Science (Chemistry) and Science (Physics).

In addition, there are PGCE with QTS School Direct opportunities at the University of Gloucestershire in Design and Technology, (Food, Resistant Materials, Systems and Control, Textiles) English, Geography, History and Music, offered through our local collaborative partner, the Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership (GITEP). They also offer Geography, History and English PGCE with our regional partners.

There are several Lead School Direct schools in Gloucestershire including Pate’s Grammar School, Balcarras School, Marling Grammar School and The Cotswold School.

The one year secondary program at Gloucestershire aims to help you become a competent and effective teacher of your subject within the 11-18 year age range. You will spend 26 weeks in at least two schools where you will receive invaluable support from experienced teachers. You will return to central provision at regular intervals throughout the year for professional studies development and subject pathway seminars. The University of Gloucestershire works together with their local and regional partners to provide a well-established and successful school based program with academic rigour.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants applying to UK schools must include both High School and University transcripts.
  • Interview required.
  • A  degree or equivalent  in a relevant subject – this should normally be with Second Class Honours (2:2) or above.
  • Minimum grade C in GCSE English Language and Mathematics or an accepted equivalent
  • International students need IELTS 6.5 overall (no less than 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in any other band) or equivalent.
  • You will need some recent experience in a secondary classroom setting. If that has not been achieved prior to interview, you will need to arrange and successfully complete three to five days in a secondary classroom setting
  • Successful completion of the NCTL literacy and numeracy professional skills tests
  • Satisfactory clearance by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

The PGDE Secondary course at the University of Gloucestershire leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England.

Graduates of the University of Gloucestershire’s PGCE Secondary teacher training program are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
