Newcastle’s School of Education is the largest School in the University with more than 4000 students studying in teacher education programs, around 1100 postgraduate students undertaking advanced study in education, and more than 150 students completing Masters or Doctoral programs by research.

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Have you been gravitating toward teaching for a while, but aren’t sure about the next step?

Using your existing degree as an introduction, the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Newcastle is a two year program, producing highly competent and fully qualified graduates ready to enter a rewarding career as a secondary teacher.

Throughout the program you will examine the key concepts and theories from educational philosophy, psychology and sociology as they relate to teaching and learning, explore language as a social practice, the principles and practice of quality teaching, the use and conduct of educational research, the integration of new technologies into learning and curriculum essentials for the discipline/s you are preparing to teach. To effectively prepare you for the job you will undertake 60 days’ formal professional experience in school settings,  and 5 days of Work Integrated Learning.

At the completion of your Master of Teaching (Secondary) you will be prepared to begin your career teaching students from Year 7 through to 12.

Newcastle’s unique approach incorporates an emphasis on Quality Teaching, the NSW model of pedagogy developed and refined by researchers at the University of Newcastle.

Entry Requirements

A 3 or 4 year Bachelors degree in a different discipline carrying a 70% GPA.

All applicants must hold a completed Bachelor degree that satisfies the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW requirements for accreditation, in order to be assessed for admission. Admission to the program will be based on an interview, a written piece of work and the Grade Point Average of the completed undergraduate degree, as described under Additional Selection Criteria.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

Graduates of University of Newcastle’s Master of Teaching (Secondary) in Australia will be eligible to apply for registration with the NSW Education Standards Authority*, essential for employment as a teacher in NSW. Your postgraduate qualification will also support registration as a teacher in other jurisdictions both nationally and internationally.

Graduates of Newcastle’s Secondary teacher training program are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
