UniSA’S programs are taught at their metropolitan campuses at Magill and Mawson Lakes. They offer a four-year Bachelor of Education and a two-year Master of Teaching spanning early childhood, primary and secondary education.

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

About the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching is a two-year program at the University of South Australia. The Secondary specialization can be completed in 18 months in an accelerated mode.

The Secondary specialization is taught at Mawson Lakes campus.

Applicants require a three-year degree from a recognized tertiary institution and two learning areas in their undergraduate degree from the following learning areas: Arts (Dance, Drama, Music, Media Arts or Visual Arts), English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship or Economics and Business), Languages, Design and Technology and Science.

The specialization prepares graduates to teach in two learning areas for Years Eight to Twelve. All students undertake at least 60 days placement in sites and schools which must be completed on a full-time basis.

All students must meet the required standard in the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) prior to graduation. Students will undertake the national literacy and numeracy tests during the first year of the degree.

Applicants must have successfully completed a 3 or 4 year Bachelor degree with a minimum of 65% average or a GPA 2.5 (out of 4.00).

Additionally, applicants must have completed a major and a minor Learning Area in which they intend to specialize aligning with the Australian National Curriculum. Majors consists of a minimum of 6 courses/27 units or equivalent with a minimum of 2 courses at Australian 3rd year undergraduate level or equivalent. Minors consist of a minimum of 4 courses/18 units or equivalent with a minimum of 2 courses at Australian 2nd year undergraduate level or equivalent.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

University of South Australia’s Master of Teaching (Secondary) program provides a recognized academic qualification which will enable graduates to apply for teacher registration in South Australia, interstate and some overseas countries.

Graduates of UniSA’s Secondary teacher training program are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
