Sending your child to university is stressful. Sending them to university on another continent can feel daunting.
At KOM Educational Consultants, we are parents too. We understand the specific knot in your stomach. While your son or daughter is Googling “best surf spots in Gold Coast,” you are Googling “Australia emergency numbers,” “healthcare for international students,” and “how to spot a rental scam.”
You’re being protective, and you deserve real answers that aren’t in the brochure.
We want to give you the reassurance you need. For over 30 years, KOM has been the safety net for thousands of Canadian families. We help students get in and ensure they’re safe, secure, and supported from the moment they leave YYZ or YVR.
Here is exactly how we handle the logistics of safety, finance, housing, and health so you can sleep at night.

The Legitimacy Check: Preventing the Education Scam
One of the biggest fears parents have, especially in the age of internet fraud, is the “education scam.” You may have heard horror stories of fly-by-night agencies charging families thousands of dollars for guaranteed admission or tuition payments that vanish.
We operate on a model of radical transparency to eliminate this risk.
The KOM Difference: We are not a third-party agent; we are the official Canadian representative for the universities we feature.
- Direct university funding: We are funded directly by institutions such as the University of Sydney and Robert Gordon University to act as their local admissions office. This is why our guidance is free.
- Follow the money: This is the most important safety feature. You never pay tuition to KOM Consultants.
- When it is time to pay for your child’s semester, you pay the university directly via their secure international payment portals, such as Flywire or Convera.
- The money goes from your bank to the university. We simply facilitate the paperwork. You never have to worry about a middleman holding your funds.
- Physical presence: We have a physical office in Hamilton, Ontario. You can call or email us, or meet with the team handling your child’s file.
We’ve been doing this since 1991. Read more about our 30-year history as a family-owned business to understand who is looking after your child.
Housing: No Mystery Roommates
Safety starts with where your child sleeps. The rental market in cities like London, Sydney, and Dublin can be competitive and, unfortunately, rife with scams targeting international students.
We strongly advise against students trying to find private rental apartments on Craigslist, Gumtree, or Facebook Marketplace from Canada. It is too risky to sign a lease for a property you haven’t seen.
Instead, we guide families toward Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA).
What is PBSA? These are large, professionally managed student residences (like UniLodge in Australia or private halls in the UK) that are designed specifically for university students.
- Security: These buildings typically feature 24/7 staffed reception desks, swipe-card access for elevators and rooms, and CCTV in all common areas. Only residents can enter the building.
- Community: Your child is placed with other students, ensuring they have an instant social circle. Isolation is a safety risk, and community is a safety net.
- Vetting: We help students connect with trusted partners, including Casita and university-managed villages. When you sign a contract with these providers, you know exactly what you are getting.
Health Safety: It’s More Than Travel Insurance
Another common misconception is that your child just needs standard travel insurance (like you would buy for a week in Mexico). That is not enough for a multi-year degree.
Our partner countries have mandatory, comprehensive health coverage systems for international students.
In Australia: OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)
- Your child cannot enter Australia without this. It is a visa requirement.
- It functions like a provincial health card (OHIP/MSP). It covers doctor visits, hospital care, ambulance services, and certain medications.
- We ensure this is purchased and active before the visa is submitted.
In the UK: IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge)
- This fee, paid as part of the visa application, grants your child access to the National Health Service (NHS).
- They can walk into a doctor’s office or hospital and receive treatment just like a UK citizen.
You don’t have to worry about a $50,000 medical bill because of a broken ankle. The system is designed to protect them.
The First 72 Hours Protocol
The most vulnerable time for any student is the first three days. They are jet-lagged, they are in a new city, and they don’t know how the bus works.
We help families plan the first 72 hours to minimize stress and confusion.
- Airport Pickup: Most of our partner universities offer a free or subsidized airport welcome service. A university representative meets your child at the arrivals gate and escorts them to a shuttle bus that takes them directly to their campus accommodation.
- The “O-Week” Buffer: We advise students to arrive at least one week before classes start. This allows them to attend International Orientation, where they are given safety briefings, are toured around the local area, and are helped with setting up a local bank account and SIM card.
- KOM Pre-Departure: Before they leave Canada, we host Pre-Departure sessions. We can connect your child with other students attending the same university so they can coordinate flights or have a “buddy” when they land.
Mental Health & Support Systems
Homesickness is common, and the pressure of professional programs (such as law or Medicine) is high.
Universities in Australia and the UK take student well-being incredibly seriously, often more so than in North America. Every partner university we work with has a dedicated International Student Support team.
They are the “On-the-Ground” Parents.
- Counselling Services: Free, confidential mental health support is available on campus.
- 24/7 Helplines: Most universities provide an after-hours crisis line specifically for students.
- Academic Support: If your child is struggling with grades, there are early-intervention programs that can help them access tutors or extensions.
Whether it’s a medical emergency or just a bad case of homesickness, there is a dedicated office 10,000km away whose entire job is to look after your child.
Visas: Preventing Rejection
A rejected visa can derail an entire future. The Australian and UK immigration systems are strict. A minor error, such as mistyping a passport number or failing to disclose a prior travel issue, can result in a denial.
This is where the KOM safety net is most critical.
Our team reviews your child’s student visa application before it is submitted. We ensure:
- The Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) or CAS number is valid.
- The OSHC/IHS is properly purchased and linked to the passport.
- The “Genuine Temporary Entrant” (GTE) statement is written correctly to satisfy immigration officers.
We don’t leave this to chance. We ensure the paperwork is perfect so your child can breeze through customs.
The Emergency Plan
Finally, we recommend that every family have a communication plan.
- Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA): We recommend all families register their child with the Government of Canada’s ROCA service. This allows the Canadian government to contact and assist your child in case of an emergency abroad (like a natural disaster).
- The KOM Lifeline: Our job doesn’t end when the plane takes off. We remain a point of contact for families throughout the degree. If you are having trouble getting an answer from the university regarding tuition invoices or transcripts, call us. We have direct lines to the Registrars in Australia and the UK.
We Are With Them (and You) Until They Graduate
Safety includes financial security. Learn how scholarships and student loans work for international degrees to ensure your child is funded for their entire stay.
Studying abroad is an adventure, but it doesn’t have to be a risk. By using the official pathways, securing verified housing, and ensuring full health coverage, you are giving your child the safest possible launchpad for their future.
Let your child focus on the task at hand. We’ll handle the safety net.
