Picture this. You just graduated with a BA in psychology or linguistics. You are fascinated by how humans communicate. You want to help children find their voice or assist stroke survivors in learning to speak again.
You look at the requirements for a Master of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) in Canada, and your heart sinks.
- Prerequisite: Human Physiology.
- Prerequisite: Neuroanatomy.
- Prerequisite: Statistics.
- Requirement: Honours Bachelor of Science.
Suddenly, your path is blocked. In Canada, SLP programs are often treated as rigid science degrees. If you didn’t spend your undergrad in a lab, you are often shut out.
But in Australia, universities see things differently. They view Speech Pathology as a diverse field that benefits from diverse backgrounds. Whether you studied Music, Education, Psychology, or English Literature, you can still become a Speech Pathologist.
Don’t let prerequisites stop you. Bypass the Canadian admissions bottleneck with a graduate entry master’s.
Here is how the Graduate Entry pathway works.
The Any Discipline Move
Australian universities have pioneered the Graduate Entry Master’s. These are 2-year, intensive programs designed specifically for students who already hold an undergraduate degree in any discipline.
They don’t expect you to be an expert in anatomy on day 1. They teach you everything you need to know from the ground up.
- Your Background: BA in Psych, Linguistics, Arts, or General Science.
- The Program: You enter a Master of Speech Language Pathology.
- The Outcome: You graduate as a fully qualified SLP, eligible to license in Australia and Canada.
This is a significant career pivot without the need to pursue a second undergraduate degree.
Spotlight: The Schools That Want You
At KOM Consultants, we work with universities that value the human side of communication, not just the scientific side.
1. The University of Sydney
Ranked among the top universities globally, the University of Sydney offers a Master of Speech-Language Pathology program renowned for its inclusivity.
- The Entry Requirement: A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA (usually around a Credit/65% average).
- The Prerequisite Hack: Sydney does not have rigid prerequisite courses. Instead, they have Assumed Knowledge modules (e.g., in Linguistics and Anatomy) that you complete before classes start. This means you don’t need to waste a year taking night classes; you just do the prep work.
2. Macquarie University
Located in Sydney’s high-tech hub, Macquarie University is home to the Australian Hearing Hub. Their Master of Speech and Language Pathology is a top choice for Canadians.
- The Entry Requirement: A Bachelor’s degree in any field.
- The Prerequisite Hack: They require some introductory courses in Linguistics and Psychology. If you didn’t take these in your BA, you can often take them as single-unit electives online before you arrive.
3. Griffith University
Based in the Gold Coast, Griffith University offers a 2-year professional-entry master’s program.
They are looking for communication potential. Admissions are based on your GPA and an interview. If you can demonstrate empathy and communication skills (likely honed during your Arts degree), you are a strong candidate.
The Human Element: From English Major to SLP
We worked with a student named Sarah from Ottawa. She was an English major who loved phonetics but had never taken a biology course. Canadian schools wouldn’t look at her application. She applied to the University of Sydney through KOM.
She struggled a bit with the anatomy class in her first semester (and leaned on her science-grad classmates for help), but she excelled in the linguistics and counselling classes, where her arts background was strong. Today, she works in a private practice in Ontario, helping children with literacy issues. Her non-science background made her a better therapist.
Returning to Canada: The Provincial Path
Can you practice in Canada with an Australian degree? Yes. However, you must be licensed by the provincial regulatory body where you intend to work (e.g., CASLPO in Ontario or CSHBC in BC).
Most provinces will assess your international degree to ensure it meets Canadian standards (Australian degrees are widely recognized because their system is so similar). You may also need to write the Canadian Entry to Practice Exam (CETP).
For a national overview of the profession and resources for internationally educated professionals, visit Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC).
Don’t Let Your Major Define Your Career
You want to help people communicate. You don’t need a BSc to do that. You just need a university that recognizes your potential.
Curious if your Arts degree qualifies? Send your transcript to the KOM Admissions team. We will review your GPA and advise you on which programs you can apply to for the upcoming intake.
