The Bachelor of Medical Science degree at Griffith University will help students take their first step on the road to becoming a doctor. Through a combination of problem-based learning, small group practical and clinical skills sessions, plus extensive clinical placements and considerable online support, medical students will develop the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary to succeed as an intern. As a graduate, students will be caring and competent and have a fundamental understanding of the science of medicine.
Griffith Medical Science students will develop communication skills and learn about the art and science of medicine in its wider social and ethical context. Griffith students will take part in extensive clinical placements in healthcare facilities ranging from rural settings through to the new Gold Coast University Hospital. Medical students will also develop an understanding of the importance of lifelong learning, and learn how to be resourceful in seeking information and adapting to new technologies.
High-achieving secondary school leavers who have the commitment to study an intensive two-year degree, will be able to progress from the Griffith Bachelor of Medical Science program directly into our graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine degree. Medical students will need to achieve a GPA of at least 5.0 for the degree and achieve a minimum grade of Pass in the designated course Human Skills for Medicine in order to be eligible for the Doctor of Medicine.
In the first year, Griffith medical students will be introduced to the basic sciences underpinning biomedical science – anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, genes and disease, microbiology, physiology, molecular genetics and psychology.
In second year, students will study these areas in greater depth and take medically focused courses in immunology, infectious disease, pharmacology, metabolism, biochemistry, health, law and ethics and epidemiology. Griffith Medical Students will also have the opportunity to study a number of non-science courses from a broad range of offerings across the University.
