The focus of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) program at La Trobe University is on achieving excellence in provisions of clinical services and reviewing medication for safety and effectiveness. Students will develop skills in drug development, action and use in disease states, medication review, counselling and communication. The aim is to understand the effects and best use of medications and the role of medicines in responsible healthcare.
Much of the first year is concerned with the science that underlies the study of pharmacy, and with the tools of mathematics and information technology. The subjects Introduction to Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Formulation A introduce students to the practice of pharmacy, and include visits to community and hospital pharmacies. Students must complete subjects totalling at least 120 credit points in each year.
Later years study shifts from the basic sciences to the pharmacy-specific subjects of therapeutics, pharmacy practice, pharmaceutics, pharmacology and medicinal chemistry, together with studies relating to the health care system. Students spend progressively more time in practical placements, during which they undertake specific learning tasks.
Entry into the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) program for students holding Canada Secondary School diploma: 80% with prerequisites of math and chemistry.
Students applying for advanced standing are considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to the course pre-requisites being met. This individual assessment is done at enrolment.
The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council. Graduates of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) may be eligible to apply for registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
It is the student’s responsibility to contact their local credentialing body for re-entry pathways. The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) is the national certification body for the pharmacy profession in Canada. Upon returning, students must go through an evaluation procedure with the PEBC.
