If you are going to study law on the other side of the world, the school had better be worth the flight.

Reputation is the question underneath every other question on this site. Parents ask it directly. Students ask it sideways, by asking whether the degree will be taken seriously at home.

So here are the numbers, where they come from, and what they do not tell you.

The Adelaide Law School ranking

Adelaide Law School is ranked 63rd in the world for Law and Legal Studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Law and Legal Studies.

QS by Subject is one of the two rankings that carry weight in legal academia, alongside Times Higher Education. It weighs academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations and the h-index of published work. It is not a popularity contest, and it is not something a university can buy its way into.

How that compares with Canada

This is the comparison that answers the question people are asking.

In the same 2026 ranking, only three Canadian law schools appear in the global top 100: Toronto, UBC and McGill.

If you are not at Toronto, UBC or McGill, Adelaide is not a step down. On this measure it is a step up.

That is worth sitting with, because the assumption running underneath most conversations about studying law abroad is that it is a fallback. For the large majority of Canadian law applicants, the numbers do not support that assumption.

Australia is also well represented in the top 100 generally, which reflects a legal academy with real depth rather than one strong outlier.

Outside it

Every other Canadian law school. That includes schools with excellent reputations and long waiting lists.

Adelaide’s position and the Canadian comparison are from the 2026 QS ranking by subject. Exact placings for the three Canadian schools are not stated here because we have not verified them at source. Subject rankings move year to year and a shift of a few places rarely means anything.

What rankings do not tell you

We would rather you read these properly than just quote them.

Subject rankings measure research strength and reputation among academics and employers. They do not measure teaching quality directly, they do not measure student experience, and they do not tell you whether a particular school is good at the particular thing you care about.

They also move. A school at 63 this year might be at 58 or 71 next year, and that movement usually means very little.

What a top-100 placement does tell you reliably is that the institution is taken seriously by other academics and by employers who hire its graduates. That is the question you were asking.

Research standing, which is the harder measure

Australia runs a national research assessment that rates university research against world standard by discipline. It is a peer-reviewed government exercise rather than a magazine ranking, and it is considerably harder to influence.

Adelaide Law School has been rated above world standard, and is one of only seven of Australia's forty law schools to have held that rating continuously.

Seven out of forty is a more revealing number than any single-year ranking position, because continuity is the thing that cannot be manufactured in a good year.

1883, and what continuity means

Adelaide Law School is the second oldest law school in Australia, established in 1883. It is one of the oldest continuously operating common law schools anywhere in the world.

That matters for a practical reason rather than a sentimental one. A law school running for more than 140 years has alumni in senior positions across the profession, judiciary and academy, in Australia and beyond. It has institutional relationships that a newer school is still building. And it has survived long enough to demonstrate that its standards are not dependent on one generation of staff.

What the merger changed, and what it did not

Worth addressing directly, because you will see both framings and they can look contradictory.

Adelaide University is a new institution, formed by bringing together the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, and it describes itself as Australia's new major university. It opened in 2026.

The law school inside it is not new. Adelaide Law School continues, with its history, its academic staff, its research units and its 1883 founding date intact. The merger changed the university around the law school, not the law school itself.

So both things are true at once. You are applying to a new university and an old law school. The combined institution draws on 180 years of experience across its two foundation universities, sits within the Group of Eight, and is ranked in the global top 50 in four subject areas.

Global top 50 in four subject areas, including Dentistry and Nursing at 49 and 50, QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. Global top 100 in 19 further subjects, aggregate of THE and QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

The Group of Eight

The Group of Eight is the association of Australia's leading research-intensive universities. It is the closest Australian equivalent to Canada's U15, and membership is the shorthand Australian employers and academics use for a research university of the first rank.

For a Canadian audience, this is probably the most useful single signal, because it places the institution in a category rather than at a number that moves each year. What the school is strong at teaching is a more concrete measure again.

Where reputation shows up

Rankings matter at two moments: when you are choosing, and when someone is reading your CV.

The first is the one you control. The second is where the pathway does more work than the ranking does, because arriving home with your Canadian requirements already satisfied, rather than a year of exams ahead of you, is what a hiring partner notices. That is covered in the guide to the Montréal pathway.

Where to go from here

The Adelaide Law guide sets out the full pathway, entry routes and timeline. If you want to talk through how Adelaide compares with the Canadian schools you are considering, we will give you a straight answer, and help you weigh the trade-offs either way.
