The Plan B Lawyer: How a 2-Year UK LLB Saves You Time & Money

In the minds of many Canadian students (and their parents), studying Law in the UK is viewed as Plan B.

Plan A is the traditional route:

  • Grind through a 4-year undergrad.

  • Spend a summer (and $1,000+) on LSAT prep.

  • Fight for a seat at a Canadian law school.

  • Spend 3 years earning your JD.

  • Start working.

It’s a respectable path. But it is also a slow one. If you didn’t get into Plan A this year, you might be feeling defeated. You might be thinking about waiting another year to re-apply.

We are here to tell you that waiting is the most expensive thing you can do. The UK offers a pathway that isn’t just a backup, it is a strategic shortcut. It’s called the Senior Status LLB.

Here is why Plan B might actually be the smarter financial move.

1. The Senior Status Shortcut

In the UK, law is an undergraduate degree. But because you (as a Canadian university graduate) already have a Bachelor’s degree, you don’t have to start from scratch.

UK universities recognize your previous education. They allow you to enter a Graduate Entry or Senior Status LLB.

  • The Math: They strip away the electives and non-law courses, leaving just the core legal modules.

  • The Result: You finish a full, accredited Law degree in two years.

Need the basics? We covered the mechanics of this pathway in our foundational guide: No LSAT, No Problem: The 2-Year Law Degree Guide.

2. The Financial Argument (Tuition vs. Opportunity Cost)

This is where the Plan B narrative falls apart. Critics often say, “But isn’t international tuition more expensive?”

On paper, yes. The annual tuition fee for a UK law student is often higher than a domestic Canadian student. But you are looking at the wrong number.

You need to look at the Total Cost of Acquisition of your career. Let’s run a hypothetical scenario:

The Canadian Route (3 Years)

  • Tuition: $20,000 x 3 Years = $60,000

  • Living Costs: $15,000 x 3 Years = $45,000

  • Total Cost: $105,000

  • Lost Salary: You spend Year 3 studying, earning $0.

The UK Route (2 Years)

  • Tuition: $30,000 x 2 Years = $60,000

  • Living Costs: $20,000 x 2 Years = $40,000

  • Total Cost: $100,000

  • GAINED Salary: In Year 3, instead of sitting in a classroom, you are working. If your first-year Articling/Associate salary is $60,000, you are financially ahead.

By graduating a year early, you enter the workforce a year early. That is one extra year of lifetime earnings and seniority.

Worried about funding? Remember, you can use OSAP and provincial loans for these programs. Read our Cost of Studying Abroad Guide for the details.

3. The No LSAT Advantage

Time is money. But stress is also a cost. The LSAT is a massive barrier that requires months of study. Most UK Law schools do not require the LSAT. They admit you based on your undergraduate grades.

This means you can go straight from finishing your undergrad in April to starting Law School in September. No Gap Year spent studying logic games. No testing fees. Just momentum.

4. The Return Ticket Reality

The only valid concern with Plan B is the return process. “Can I actually practice in Canada?”

Yes. The UK legal system is the grandfather of the Canadian system. They are both Common Law jurisdictions. When you return, you go through the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) process.

  • You submit your UK transcript.

  • They assign you Challenge Exams (typically 5–7 exams).

  • You self-study for these exams (usually taking 3–6 months) and write them.

Once passed, you are in the exact same position as a Canadian law grad. You apply for Articling positions just like everyone else.

Deep Dive: We broke down the NCA steps in detail in our Return Ticket Accreditation Guide.
