Medical programs in Australia are offered at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Undergrad Medicine programs in Australia (those that are open to new high school graduates) do not require MCAT (other tests may be required). Students with partial university study are also eligible to apply to undergrad entry programs (some restrictions apply). Interviews may be required.
Australian Graduate Entry Medicine programs will require students to have completed an undergrad degree (by the end of the previous year prior to entry) and also have completed MCAT test (completed within specified timeframes). Interviews are required, usually by invitation, based on academic results and MCAT scores.
After successfully completing a Medical Program in Australia, graduates will be awarded a Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or Doctor of Medicine (DM) qualification. Graduates then enter the medical workforce in Australia, primarily in the major public teaching hospitals, and complete a 1-year internship program. It is only on the successful completion of this internship that junior doctors are eligible to receive full registration with the State Medical Board or Council (in Australia). In general, registration in one state of Australia entitles the doctor to registration in other states. Most junior doctors undertake an additional year of hospital training before commencing postgraduate medical training leading to specialization. Specialist medical training is carried out by the relevant specialty medical college and the state public health system. This training is not conducted by universities.
It is the student’s responsibility to contact their local credentialing body for re-entry pathways.
All students interested in studying Medicine in Australia should contact KOM Consultants for full details on application processes.
Canadian Students: Students entering the medical profession contact the Medical Council of Canada for their home country requirements and international credentialing. For information on pathways back to Canada after completing your medical degree in Australia, refer to the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials-Medicine website.
Medical programs are highly competitive, and simply meeting the minimum GPA requirement does not ensure acceptance. Admission is granted to the most qualified applicants.
Candidates with competitive GPAs will be invited for interviews. Admission to the program will be based on the performance during the interview. Griffith University is the exception that does not conduct interviews; admission spots are allocated based on the highest GPA rankings.
