Curtin University’s graduate entry master (GEM) qualification for speech pathologists is for those with a bachelor degree in another discipline. The academic coursework and clinical practice integrate contemporary theory and research across three streams;
- Human Communication Science – units where there is a theoretical focus and the aim is to introduce students to theoretical, evidence-based material and help them to see the link to clinical practice,
- Clinical Science in Speech Pathology – units that are grounded in clinical practice, however the aim is to facilitate students seeing the link from clinical practice back to the theory they are learning about in the Human Communication Science stream, and
- Research Methods – provide students with the research skills they require to become evidence based clinicians.
This course in speech pathology will allow students to develop an integrated understanding of the science of human communication as well as the professional competencies for providing speech pathology services to people with communication and swallowing disorders.
Entry Requirements
Applicants will be required to have a completed honours degree or bachelor degree with a minimum course weighted average of 65%. The application process is competitive and typically successful applicants have demonstrated a 75% – 84% average. There is no preferred undergraduate degree for admission.
Evidence of studies in human biology at university level is essential. Applicants without this background will have to complete additional units in this area before commencing the course.
