Qualify to become a teacher in high school (Years 7 to 12) with the opportunity to specialize in one or two teaching areas, depending on the subjects you wish to teach. If you would like to teach science, mathematics or languages, you may study these as ‘double method’ areas.
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) offer at the University of Sydney in Australia the following secondary school curriculum areas (subject to quotas and demand):
Gain hands-on experience with 45 days of teaching practice in schools, a 35-day internship and a professional research project. This experience will ensure you develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a successful teacher at early childhood, primary or secondary level.
Applicants must have successfully completed a 3 or 4 year Bachelor degree with a minimum of 65% average or a GPA 2.5 (out of 4.00).
Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) need to be able to demonstrate a record of studies in their undergraduate degree(s) that satisfies the specific prerequisite requirements of the subjects they wish to teach.
In general, applicants must have completed three years’ full-time undergraduate study in the subject they intend to be their Major Teaching Area (sometimes referred to as the “1st Teaching Area”), and two years’ full-time undergraduate study in the subject they intend to be their Minor Teaching Area (“2nd Teaching Area”).
University of Sydney’s Master of Teaching (Secondary) graduates receive accreditation from the NSW Institute of Teachers in Australia.
Graduates of Sydney’s Secondary teacher training program are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
