Look out the window. The leaves are gone. The wind is getting colder. The Canadian gray is settling in.
Now, picture this: It is February. You are walking to your first lecture. It is 28°C. You are wearing sunglasses. You can hear the ocean.
This isn’t a fantasy. It is the semester 1 intake in Australia. Because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, its academic year begins in February rather than September. This means that while your friends in Canada are trudging through the slush of the second semester, you could be starting a brand new adventure in the Australian summer.
But you have to move now. We are entering the last call window for the February intake. Can you still get in? Yes. But the timeline for visas, housing, and enrollment is tight.
Here is your 3-month emergency countdown to move from thinking about it to boarding the plane.
Rushing your application? Don’t forget to review our pre-departure safety guide.
November: Sprint Month (Apply Immediately)
If you haven’t applied yet, this is the month to do it. Universities like Griffith, Bond, and Sydney are finalizing their cohorts.
Your checklist:
- Submit Transcripts: Send your high school or university transcripts to KOM immediately. We can often complete an assessment within 24-48 hours.
- English Scores: If you need an IELTS or PTE test (rare for Canadians, but sometimes required), book it today.
- Accept Your Offer: If you are holding a conditional offer, submit your final documents now to convert it to a full offer.
- Pay Your Deposit: You cannot get a visa without a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE). The university only issues a CoE after you accept your offer and pay the tuition deposit.
- KOM Advantage: Because we are the official application center, we can flag your application as urgent to the admissions teams in Australia to speed up the processing time.
December: Logistics Month (Visa & Housing)
December is a tricky month because universities shut down for the holiday break (usually Dec 20 – Jan 5). You need to have your logistics locked in before the office lights go out.
- The Student Visa (Subclass 500). Once you have your CoE, you apply for your visa.
- Processing Time: This varies wildly. It can take 2 weeks or 2 months. You must get this in before the holidays to avoid the January bottleneck.
- Health Check: You will likely need a medical exam by a panel physician. These appointments fill up fast in December. Book it early.
- Secure Your Housing: Do not plan to find housing when you arrive. The Australian rental market is competitive.
- Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA): We recommend booking a room in a student residence (like UniLodge or Scape) for your first semester. It guarantees you a bed.
- KOM Partners: We can connect you with our housing partners to secure a contract from Canada.
- Trust Signal: Check current visa processing times on the official Australian Department of Home Affairs website.
January: Goodbye Month (Flights & Packing)
You’re approved. You’re enrolled. Now it gets real.
- Flights: Book your flight to arrive at least one week before Orientation Week (O-Week).
Why? Jet lag (14-hour time difference). You need time to open a bank account, get an Aussie SIM card, and figure out the bus route before classes start.
- OSHC (Health Insurance): Ensure your Overseas Student Health Cover is active from the day you land. You cannot enter the country without it.
- The Winter Pack: Wait, winter? Yes. Remember that Australian seasons are reversed. It will be hot when you arrive in Feb/March, but by June/July, it will be their winter. It doesn’t snow, but it gets chilly (10°C). Pack a hoodie and jeans alongside your swimsuits.
The Too Late Myth
We hear it every year: “It’s October/November; I’ve probably missed the boat.” You haven’t.
Many Australian universities have rolling admissions and can process international applications right up until January for strong candidates.
- Bond University (Gold Coast) is particularly flexible, with three intakes per year (Jan, May, Sept).
- Macquarie University (Sydney) is known for efficient processing.
Don’t Spend Another Winter Waiting
You have two choices for February:
- Wake up in the dark, scrape ice off your windshield, and drive to a job you don’t love.
- Wake up to sunlight, grab a coffee, and walk onto a university campus that is going to change your career.
The window is closing, but it’s not shut yet. Let’s hustle. Fast-track your application now.
If you miss February, don’t worry. Get ready for next year with our New Year’s resolutions for students.
