It is December 31st. You are about to watch the ball drop (or the fireworks go off).
You are thinking about the last 12 months: the exams, the stress, the long Canadian winter. You are thinking about the rejection letters, the waitlists, or the uncertainty that defined your year.
And you are asking yourself the question that haunts every student: “Where will I be this time next year?”
Will you be sitting on the same couch, worrying about the same local admissions cycles? Or will you be watching the fireworks over Sydney Harbour, surrounded by new friends and halfway through your medical degree?
2026 is a blank page. Let’s write a better story.
At KOM Educational Consultants, we believe that New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t be limited to going to the gym. They should be about changing your career trajectory.
Here are 5 New Year’s Resolutions to turn you from a prospective student into an international one.
Resolution #1: I Will Stop Doom-Scrolling Admissions Forums
We know you do it. You spend hours on Reddit, pre-med forums, or Student Doctor Network reading horror stories. You read about GPA cutoffs that seem impossible. You read about students with perfect resumes getting rejected.
You absorb the anxiety of thousands of strangers.
The solution? The primary source rule.
Online forums are full of anxiety. They are echo chambers of stress where people vent their frustrations and are rarely accurate representations of admission.
Instead, resolve to get primary source data.
- Talk to a Human: At KOM, we have the official admissions data from our partner universities. We know that Griffith University needs a specific GPA for medicine. We know that Bond University doesn’t require the LSAT.
- Get an Assessment: We can look at your transcript and give you a straight answer: Yes, you are eligible or No, but here is a pathway.
Clear the confusion. Get the facts. When you replace rumours with requirements, the nerves disappear.
Don’t wait too long. Check the application deadlines for Australia to determine exactly when to submit to beat the rush.
Resolution #2: I Will Get the Boring Stuff Done in January
Procrastination is the dream-killer. The number one reason students miss the September or February intake isn’t bad grades; surprisingly, it’s missing documents.
You tell yourself you will “do it later,” and suddenly it’s May, the program is full, and you are still waiting for a transcript.
The solution is the first sprint of the week.
Resolve to spend the first week of January gathering your paperwork. This is the unsexy part of the dream, but it is the most important.
- Order Transcripts: Contact your high school or university registrar immediately. It can sometimes take weeks to get officially sealed copies. Do this before the semester gets busy.
- Check Your Passport: This is a classic mistake. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of return. If it expires in 2026 or early 2027, renew it via Passport Canada now. Processing times can flare up unexpectedly.
- Update Your Resume: Add your most recent volunteer experience or clinical shadowing.
Once these files are sitting in a folder on your laptop labelled “KOM Application,” hitting “Apply” takes 10 minutes. That way, you can move fast when you are ready.
Resolution #3: I Will Budget for the Adventure of School
Studying abroad is an investment, but it’s also a life experience. Too many students build a survival budget. They calculate tuition and rent only.
Then they get to Australia or the UK, and they have to say “No” to the road trip to the Great Barrier Reef or the weekend flight to Paris because they didn’t plan for it.
Build a “Yes” budget.
Start a travel fund now, even if it’s just $50 a week from your part-time job.
- Research Costs: Don’t guess. Use tools like Numbeo to compare the cost of a cappuccino in Gold Coast vs. Toronto.
- Factor in the Fun: Resolution #3 is budgeting for the memories. Whether it’s a surf camp in Byron Bay or a train ticket to Edinburgh, you want to say “Yes” to the invitations you get.
- Look for Hidden Money: Research provincial loans (OSAP, StudentAid BC) and university-specific scholarships.
Use our Study Abroad Cost Guide to help you build a realistic financial plan that includes OSAP and scholarships.
Resolution #4: I Will Be Brave (And Have “The Talk”)
Leaving home is scary. Leaving your friends, your family, and your favourite coffee shop is hard. It is a massive leap of faith.
But often, the hardest part isn’t your own fear, it’s your parents’ fear. They are concerned about your safety, finances, and future.
The fix? The “CEO” approach
Resolve to have a mature, data-driven conversation with your family. Do not approach them asking for permission; approach them as an adult presenting a plan.
- Show them the Plan: Don’t just say “I want to go to Australia.” Show them the KOM website. Show them our safety guide. Show them the accreditation pathways that prove you can return to Canada to work.
- Be the CEO of Your Future: When you approach this with research and confidence, they will feel confident in you.
We remember Alex, a Law student who was terrified to leave Toronto. He almost backed out at the airport. Two years later, he graduated from Bond University as Valedictorian and told us it was the best decision of his life.
Your future self is begging you to get on that plane.
Resolution #5: I Will Hit “Submit”
This is the big one. You can research for years. You can read every blog post we’ve ever written. You can follow every university on Instagram.
But nothing changes until you submit the application.
Here’s the solution: let us do it for you.
There is often a psychological barrier to hitting submit. You worry it makes it real. You worry about rejection.
Here is the truth: an application is not a commitment.
- Applying does not mean you have to go.
- Applying just buys you an option.
- It gives you an Offer Letter that you can hold in your hand and say, “I have a seat in Law School if I want it.”
Since KOM is the official application center, we can often waive the application fees. There is literally no financial risk to applying. You can apply, get an offer, and then decide. But you can’t decide on an offer you don’t have.
